About this course
STEM inclusion: using the equity compass is a transformative five-day training program designed for educators committed to fostering equity in STEM learning environments. This course equips teachers with the tools and insights necessary to address and reduce inequalities in STEM education, with a focus on supporting girls and other underrepresented minorities. Participants will engage with the Equity Compass framework, explore case studies, and participate in reflective exercises to develop actionable strategies for creating more inclusive and equitable STEM classrooms.
Learning outcomes
- Understand the Importance of Equity in STEM: Recognize the historical and ongoing challenges faced by women and minorities in STEM fields. Gain insights into the various factors that contribute to inequalities in STEM learning environments.
- Utilize the Equity Compass: Learn to apply this evidence-based tool to foster equitable practices in STEM education.
- Create an Action Plan: Design STEM learning activities that are accessible and engaging for all students. Use reflective questions and discussions to continually improve personal teaching methods in the context of equity.
- Build Confidence in Promoting Equity: Gain the confidence and competence to be advocates for equity in STEM education.
Day-by-day programe
Training usually takes place between 9:00 and 14:00, followed by after-class activities, that are optional.
DAY 1 - Introduction to equity in STEM Education
The program begins with an initial gathering where we’ll cover practical details and introduce the schedule. During this session, participants will have the opportunity to meet each other and share their individual expectations, requirements, and preferences concerning the program’s content and instructional approaches.
Following this, we will delve into an introduction to equity in STEM education, discussing its significance for everyone. Whereas equality means providing the same to all, equity means recognizing that we do not all start from the same place and must acknowledge and make adjustments to imbalances. The process is ongoing, requiring us to identify and overcome intentional and unintentional barriers arising from bias or systemic structures.
DAY 2 - The Equity Compass to support social justice

DAY 3 - Developing inclusive and equitable practice
- Bringing the eight Equity Compass dimensions together.
- Thinking further about how to develop more equitable STEM learning practice, starting with small steps.
- Thursday project: Using the Equity Compass in your practice.
- The Equity Compass is a tool for supporting socially just practice and now you know how to use it.
- Developing Inclusive and Equitable Practices.
DAY 4 - What is your idea?
Present your project.
DAY 5 - Evaluation and farewell
The analysis of gained knowledge and skills and key learning points are discussed as well as planning the follow up activities, dissemination and implementation of learning outcomes.
Closing Ceremony: Certificate distribution and closing remarks, emphasizing ongoing support and resources for participants as they implement equity in STEM learning.
